Munster League

The Munster Winter League is a well-established, inter-club, mixed-doubles competition that takes place from November to April each year involving clubs from the Province of Munster. Each season commences with leagues in Grades 1-6. Leagues comprise three or four clubs who play each other home and away, Ladies, Gents and two Mixed Doubles matches in the best of three tie-break sets. The first two Clubs in each league progress to a knock-out stage within their grade. Results are registered on-line and players ranked automatically at the end of each season.

Ardfield/Rathbarry Tennis Club first entered the Winter League in 2011/12 season with one team in Grade 5. A large contingent of players, twelve in all, took the opportunity to play in at least one match for the experience. It generated such enthusiasm that in the 2012/13 Season ARTC entered three teams in Grade 5, the only club to do so. Club members were officially graded by Coach Sabine Graff who also provided an eight-week coaching session specifically focused on League play. During that season, one team finished well enough to move up to Grade 4.

Munster is a large province and playing in the Winter League involves a fair degree of travelling to away matches as far as Nenagh, Ballina/Killaloe, Dungarvan and Waterford. Despite the potential difficulties of travelling long distances and playing to schedule in all weathers, it is well worth making the commitment to play in the MWL. Not only does the varied level and style of tennis help to develop one's own play, the social side is second to none with excellent aprés-match craic. It also maintains interest through an otherwise fallow period of the year.

If you are interested in playing in the MWL please contact your Ladies or Gents Team Captain.
